Emily Mace

This is part of the say something nice about an SEO/SEM series - feel free to nominate someone over here.

Emily Mace is an international SEO who devotes a tremendous amount of her time to helping her colleagues understand the complex world of SEO for multiple regions and languages. She is also a huge LEGO fan and loves walking her family Westie (a West Highland White Terrier dog) and listening to Prince.

Hreflang to many is the most complex area of SEO and she has mastered it. She is not only awesome at implementing it but also is able to teach others how to do it.

She speaks at conferences like BrightonSEO and writes at journals like Econsultancy. She also publishes her own help articles as well. She has been in the industry for about 20 years and is a true icon to many who know her.

Andrew Martin nominated Emily and wrote:

I first met Emily at a marketing show whilst looking for experts to help me with an international SEO project. I've found her ability to break down her immense technical SEO knowledge into plain-speak is perfect, and after attending a training session she was leading at BrightonSEO, and then a string of conference talks, she soon became my source for international SEO. Her expertise has inspired me to learn more about international audiences in SEO - their language, behavioural and technical SEO needs, and their UX needs. Emily has really inspired me, and I hope to work with her on a project again some day soon.

Emily Mace Bio: I am head of SEO at Oban International, a UK-based marketing agency specialising in international digital multi-language multi-market and multi-channel campaigns. I focus on the development of strategies to help clients such as BBC World Service, De Beers, Speedo and Camper achieve the best results and provide meaningful insights and technical solutions which help them reach their business goals. I have 20 years' experience of both SEO and IT training.

Favorite thing about the SEO community? What I love about the SEO community is the sharing of knowledge, and the opportunities to meet people at events who have the same love for technical things that I have!

One piece of advice to the SEOs out there? My one piece of SEO advice is around Hreflang tags. As my focus is purely international, all the websites I work on are attempting to attract visitors from multiple countries. I often encounter issues of cross-country cannibalisation arising from people not getting their Hreflang tags right – although these can cause so many issues, they can be quite easy to resolve if you just spend some time looking at implementation.

Favorite things in general? Everyone who knows me around Brighton (and Hove where I live) knows about my love of Lego, which is quite a big thing. My house is full of Lego, particularly sets around cars and Star Wars, which are also things my geeky mind is interested in! When I'm not geeking out I love walking our family Westie and listening to Prince!

What you want to be known for in the SEO space? Hrelfang tags are my passion really. I've built up a bit of a reputation talking about them at events such as BrightonSEO. Some of my historic talks can be found here: https://www.slideshare.net/OBAN-IDForum I have also written on the subject of International SEO for publications including Econsultancy. You can read my Ultimate Guide to International SEO on their site and here.
